Kudos, Jean
Dear Editor,
I refer to Jean Lowrie-Chin’s column of Monday March 8, with specific reference to the section “Happy Int’l Women’s Day”.
I am reminded of how Jamaica was singled out in one of my sociology textbooks. The text was used in a very popular first-year sociology course (class size averaged around 1,400 students), taught by a tenured and well-respected professor at the University of Toronto. He was also the author of the text book. He not only singled out Jamaica in the book, but also made reference to us in his lectures because, at the time (early 2000s), Jamaica had been ahead of the game, and of North America in terms of successful women in the workplace.
That said, Mrs Lowrie-Chin’s humility is admirable and I am sure many will agree that she is also included in the group of women whom I refer to as our phenomenal Jamaican women, mentioned in her article. When one takes into consideration her accomplishments in the private sector, her work as an author, selflessness through volunteerism over the years, and her dedication for the betterment of Jamaica, one cannot help but feel a sense of pride and appreciation.
Kudos, Mrs Lowrie-Chin. No wonder we are used in textbooks as shining, positive examples.
