Clarendon ‘Lions’ humble W’House
THE vaunted aspirations of Waterhouse winning the 2009/2010 Digicel Premier League was dealt another severe blow when they lost 0-1 to Humble Lions in a crucial home game at Drewsland on Sunday.
Zico Herrera, the Humble Lions midfield live-wire, pounced upon what appeared to be a wayward pass from a teammate with 16 minutes of regulation time remaining and sent a stupendous shot from 30 yards screaming high into the left-hand corner of the Waterhouse net to secure the much-needed victory for the Clarendon club that moved them up to sixth place on 34 points.
The result secured three most valuable points for the recently promoted team, but left a dent in the aspirations of Waterhouse as it condemned the Drewsland-based club to their third defeat with only four draws in seven matches of the penultimate third round of the DPL.
On a balance of play, it was a fair result despite the below par performance from Waterhouse in the face of some good, disciplined and constructive play from “The Lions of Clarendon”.
It was a victory which coach Christopher Bender thoroughly enjoyed: “When your players achieve a victory like this, especially against a team as good Waterhouse, it makes you feel good inside. It was good to see how well the players carried out instructions and how disciplined they remained throughout. I’m humbled by the win,” he added.
Geoffrey Maxwell, his opposite number, thought his team did well enough to end the first period leading by two clear goals. “We also fell down in midfield where we did not control the game long enough, as we only played in patches and even so squandered at least five scoring chances… Notwithstanding our below-par performance we must not take anything away from Humble Lions’ victory, as the goal was the best I have seen all season.”
