South Central U-20 league kicks off today
MAY PEN, Clarendon — The second season of the South Central Confederation Under-20 football competition for the 12 teams currently contesting the Super League is set to kick off today, with defending champions Monymusk FC playing away to Hillstars at Cobbla.
Like the Super League competition, the 12 participating teams will be divided into two groups (A and B) of six and will play each other once.
At the end of the preliminary round, the top-two teams from each group will advance to the semi-final stage from which the winners will meet in the final set for the weekend of May 2.
In the other games on today, Tafari Lions play Naggo Head at the Lacovia Community Centre, Woodhall host Original Hazard in the Clarendon derby at Turners Oval, Hillstars and Monymusk will meet at Cobbla, while Bodles entertain Meadows at Bodles in the big St Catherine derby.
The Tru-Juice/Downs and Leeds/Newlands encounters have been postponed. Matches start at 3:00 pm.
Group A: Tru-Juice, Naggo Head, Downs, Tafari Lions, Woodhall, Original Hazard. Group B: Meadows, Newlands, Bodles, Monymusk, Hillstars, Leeds.
In the meantime, the Super League competition will continue today with Tafari Lions hosting Naggo Head in a rescheduled game at the Lacovia Community Centre at 1:00 pm.
Last week, St Elizabeth’s Leeds United became the first team to be relegated from the competition, after they failed to show for their home game against Newlands FC at Braes River.
This is the second time that the promoted Leeds have failed to show for a game — the first being their final cross-zone fixture against Naggo Head FC on February 6.
While, the competition’s committee is yet to meet to decide the outcome of the game, in keeping with the competition’s regulations, Newlands are expected to be awarded the points.
And with Leeds fixed at the bottom of Group B with two points from 11 games and a goal difference of minus 23, it is impossible for them to claw themselves out of the bottom four that will be automatically relegated at the end of this round.
They are 14 points adrift of Tafari Lions in the safe zone and can only tally 14 points with four games reaming in this the third and final round before the semi-finals.
The four teams with the least number of points at the end of this round will be demoted to their respective parish Major Leagues.
