Village United eliminate Reno in shootout
FROME, Westmoreland — Premier League outfit Village United booked their place in the last eight of the Flow Champions Cup Knockout competition yesterday, dashing the hopes of Western Confed Super League team Reno FC 5-3 on penalty kicks after playing to a 0-0 draw after regulation and extra time at Frome.
Reno were seeking to join fellow Western Confed team Granville into the quarter-finals after the St James side beat York United on Wednesday.
Village, who have lost just once in eight matches since late January, scored all five of their penalty kicks, while Davion Thorpe’s miss on Reno’s first attempt made all the difference.
Troy Smith, Everette Mullings, Delroy Ellis, Cordel Simpson and Derrick Henry scored for Village, while Randel Morris, Evon Taylor and Orraine Warren netted for Reno.
The game was evenly balanced throughout with both teams fielding full-strength teams.
Midfielder Fabian Blake, who replaced Martin Williams for Reno, got a chance to give his team the win in the second period of extra-time, but missed a good chance by kicking wide from close range.
