St Georges oust plummeting P’More
LYNCH PARK, Portland — St Georges SC advanced to the quarter-final round of the Flow KO Cup by edging Portmore United 1-0 at Lynch Park on Wednesday.
The goal was scored by Jermaine Taylor in the 45th minute.
In a game dominated by Portmore, Reon Nelson could be cursing the gods after finding the crossbar on many occasions in leading the attack with Tramaine Stewart and Ricardo Cousins.
The visitors should have taken an early lead when Stewart had St Georges goalie Randal Huie at his mercy and fired wide of target.
Shortly afterwards, Stewart’s shot was blocked by Huie and it fell to Nelson, whose effort was again blocked by Huie.
St Georges then countered through Richardo Watson and Damion Harwood, with the shot by the latter being held by Dwayne Kerr.
St Georges took the lead when Huie climbed high to hold on to an Andre Campbell corner and started a counter-attack, but Watson was taken down outside the penalty area.
The resultant free kick by captain Jermaine Taylor flew through the defence and beat Kerr, who was left a mere spectator.
Immediately thereafter, Nelson should have equalised, but found the crossbar, with the half ending with the home team in the lead.
The second half saw an improved St Georges attacking through Harwood, Delroy James, Watson, Girvon Brown and Leon Irving, but they found Kerr hard to beat.
Coach Braxton Hyre was pleased with the victory.
“I think Portmore created a number of chances and we’re happy for the win. Being in the quarter-final is a plus for us,” he said.
Losing coach Neville Bell was disappointed: “We should’ve been up four goals in the first half. We got a number of chances, but did not make use of them,” he said.
