McFarlane notches another win Down Under
JAMAICA’S Olympic silver medallist Danny McFarlane continued his good early-season form by winning the 400m hurdles event at the Melbourne Track Classic yesterday.
The 37-year-old McFarlane, who last week set a world-leading time of 49.19 seconds at a meet in Sydney, yesterday eased to victory in 49.92 seconds, beating Australian Brendan Cole, 50.42, and Great Britain’s Danny Brandwood, 50.83.
McFarlane, a three-time national 400 hurdles champion, captured the silver medal in the 2004 OLympic Games held in Athens, Greece, and has made the final of every major global meet since then, placing fourth in the Beijing Games in 2008 and sixth in the IAAF World Championships in Germany last year.
Meanwhile, there were four world-leading performances at the meet. Kenyan David Lekuta Rudisha won the 800m in 1 minute 43.15 seconds; Great Britain’s Andrew Baddeley took the 5000m in 13 minutes 20.85 seconds and Ireland’s Mary Teresa Cullen claimed the women’s 5000m in 15 minutes 27.75 seconds.
Liam Zamel-Paez of Australia equalled his world-leading height of 2.25m in the high jump.
