Chris Byfield: JA’s triple threat
If there is one sure thing about this generation, it is that we have an overwhelming array of talent. Twenty-one year-old Christopher Byfield, for instance, is a multi-talented individual who has — in just three years — broken down barriers in the Jamaican entertainment industry.
The New York native left his hometown of Bronx in hopes of making a name for himself in the homeland of his parents. TEENage sat down with him to get the 411on his professional journey.
TEENage: What do you do?
Christopher Byfield (CB): I’m a dancer, model, actor and musician (I play drums).
TEENage: Why did you come to Jamaica? Why didn’t you stay in America and express your talent there?
CB: Jamaica is where my roots are. Both my parents are Jamaican and I feel if there is anywhere in the world that I should make a name for myself, it is here in Jamaica.
TEENage: How long have you been doing this?
CB: I’ve been dancing since 2006, but it was only since being featured in the Brick and Lace’s Love is Wicked video that I really started to dance professionally. Modelling is something I always wanted to try out. I auditioned for Pulse and failed on my first try. On my second try, I made the cut and participated in the 2008 Caribbean Fashion Model search and I now have a contract with the agency. My first ‘acting’ experience was in Timeka Marshall’s video when I played the lead male role. But it was in 2009 that I had a major acting role when I was casted in Royal Palm Etate’s spin-off The Blackburns.
TEENage: Which one of your several talents are you really focusing on at present?
CB: Dancing is what really opened doors for me. Many of the things I did and am doing is from references of me as a dancer, so I’m always dancing. But I want to do some more acting.
TEENage: Who are some of the people you have worked with over the years?
CB: I’ve worked with directors like Jay Wills and Ras Kassa and artistes like Brick and Lace, Courtney John, Konshens, Natalie Storm, and Ms Trinity, to name a few. Also, I’ve worked with Pulse team for their full-figure reality show where I choreographed a few dance routines. I was featured in the most recent Bigga commercial, and a Red Label Wine commercial as well.
TEENage: What new projects are you currently working on?
CB: Well, I’m just gearing up for the return of The Blackburns show. But the entertainment industry, for the most part, is really spontaneous so sometimes things just pop up. I am working on doing some shows though, probably some overseas.
TEENage: What has been the most challenging thing you’ve faced thus far?
CB: Haven’t face much of a challenge as yet, just to build my faith and trust and love in Father God and stay positive and humble.
TEENage: What inspires you?
CB: What really keeps me going is my mother, just to do well and make her alright. Her strength and wanting to make her proud inspires me. Otherwise, (surprisingly) I just realised how good of a dancer Michael Jackson was. Even Chris Brown, I like his versatility and such, but I strive to make my work original.
TEENage: Where do you see yourself in another 10 years from now?
CB: Being an entrepreneur, probably even an artiste, you never know. All of what I’m doing now are things that started out as an idea, something I decided to give a try that turned out well. So, I’m really not sure what I will be up to at the time. But for sure I will be finishing up college, doing business and just trying to be successful.
TEENage: Finish the statement – If I wasn’t dancing, modelling or acting, I would be
CB: A normal kid going to school, college, studying business.
TEENage: What do you spend most of your free time doing?
CB: Hitting the gym, working out. If I’m not working out, I’m educating myself in some way, upgrading my vocabulary, trying to get updated on all that’s going on in the world, or just something to improve me.
TEENage: How can people get a hold of Christopher Byfield?
CB: My e-mail address is christopher.byfield@gmail.com. You can find me as Christopher Byfield on Myspace® and Facebook® as well as @chrisbyfield on Twitter.
TEENage: Do you have any final words for the TEENs?
CB: Stay strong, be humble, patient and have faith in God because through him anything is possible.
