Mullings demolishes Gordon in pro debut
WELTERWEIGHT boxer Sakima Mullings has issued a warning to fighters in his division after demolishing the plucky Raymond Gordon by way of a technical knockout, two rounds into their four-round contest.
Mullings made his long- awaited professional debut at the Barbican Beach Complex on Saturday night in the Jamaica Boxing Board of Control Hands of Gold series and the fighter was in a no-nonsense mood after the referee brought an early end to the fight with ‘Tough Skin’ Gordon well beaten.
“It feels great (to have won) and I’m looking to forward to cleaning up the welterweight division in Jamaica and becoming the welterweight champion by the end of 2010. Any and every welterweight out there had better get ready because Mullings is coming,” said the Bruising Gym fighter.
Of his Stanley Coach Gym opponent, Mullings said he went in to finish him after realising he had hurt him early in the fight.
“I was trying to pull him out in the first round and see what he had to offer. I felt I had him hurt so I just imposed my will on him a little more and let loose with the punches,” he said.
In an earlier amateur heavyweight match-up, Andre Reid of the Jamaica Defence Force beat Jamaro Nooks of the Hard Knocks Gym on the judges’ decision in a three- round contest.
In the middleweight Reece Shagourie defeated Hard Knock’s Catoney Robinson after the towel was thrown in during the third and final round, while in the light welterweight class Phillip Bowes was decided the victor in a close battle with national champion Shawn Wheatle of the JDF.
Also in a three-round contest, welterweight Ahmet Patterson was adjudged the winner against Ricardo Smith of Hard Knocks, who faded in the last two rounds after starting positively.
Shagourie, Bowes and Patterson all hail from the Repton Boxing Club in London and, due to their Jamaican ancestry, are eligible to represent the island in the Commonwealth Games in India come October.
