UWI, UTech, Mico win in Inter-Collegiate TT
THE University of the West Indies (UWI) and University of Technology (UTech) swapped wins, while Mico Teachers College triumphed during matches played on Thursday in the Inter-Collegiate Table Tennis League.
The UWI defeated UTech 5-0 in a females match and UTech clipped UWI 3-2 in a males duel, as the honours were shared in a double-header hosted by UWI in the Students’ Union Hall. In the third match, Mico trounced visitors Montego Bay Community College (MBCC) 4-1, in a males contest.
These were the last set of matches in the first round, making the league now at its half-way mark.
Former champions UWI lead the females points standings with four points, ahead of UTech and GC Foster College on 2.5 points each, with the top two finishers qualifying for the final.
On the males side, two former champions, UTech and UWI are in first and second place on eight and seven points, respectively, followed by GC Foster College with six points, and Mico and MBCC on four points each. The top four finishers will progress to the semi-finals.
Team semi-finals and finals, as well as individual events — men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles — will be played at UTech on Saturday, April 10.
The UWI team is coached by Sandra Riettie, UTech by Colin McNeish, GC Foster College by Richard Davidson, MBCC by Glendon Powell and Mico by player/coach Altamont Henry.
In individual results on Thursday’s UWI/UTech females match, national representative Janelle Morris overpowered Latoya Lynch 3-0, Kemesha Francis cruised past Shelby Stephenson 3-0, Marsha-Rae McBean eased past Samantha Simpson 3-0 and Carla Clarke won by default, in singles matches for UWI. Morris and McBean overwhelmed Lynch and Stephenson 3-0 in doubles, to complete the 5-0 victory for UWI.
In the UWI/UTech males duel, Jermaine Newell crushed Marlon Perry 3-0 and national player Emani McPherson overwhelmed Joel Campbell 3-0 in singles matches; and McPherson and Newell trounced Campbell and Chevarlo Foster 3-0 in doubles, for UTech’s three wins. Robert Gabay crushed Carlington Facey 3-0 and Foster trounced Damion Scott 3-0 for UWI’s two consolation victories.
In the Mico/MBCC males encounter, Gary Catnott, Altamont Henry and Obrien Henry (Altamont’s son) cruised past Histron Hoarde, Orville Williams and Alec Tomlin, respectively, by 3-0 scores, in singles matches. In doubles, the Henrys crushed Kimani Whyte and Peter Wright 3-0 for Mico’s fourth win, as Shane-Michael Grant trounced Carlyle Lewis 3-0, to pull one back for MBCC.
The return-round of matches begin next Thursday when two male matches — Mico entertaining UWI and GC Foster College visiting MBCC — will be played.
