Papine on track in girls U-19 hockey
PAPINE High School girls maintained their unbeaten run while St Andrew Technical Boys moved up to joint second in Zone B in the second week of the ISSA/Jamaica Hockey Federation Under-19 Schools League at the Mona Hockey Facility.
Chakira Airey’s field goal in the 18th minute and Trudy Ann Knight’s penalty corner in the 48th enabled defending champions Papine to register their third consecutive win when they defeated the improving Immaculate Conception 2-0 on Wednesday.
The Andrea Hoo-coached Papine will next play Excelsior today at 2:00 pm as they try to extend their lead at the top of the table.
Excelsior beat Wolmer’s Girls’ 2-0 courtesy of Alexia McDonald, who netted in the 12th minute, with Krystal Barrett completing the task in the 44th — both being field goals.
In the other two matches played Wednesday, Campion College girls grabbed their first point from four matches when they held Alpha Academy 0-0 and in the only boys match, STATHS surprised Papine 2-1 to move to three points and join Wolmer’s Boys’ in second place.
Javon Bucknor (22nd) and Mark Morris (40th) rose to the occasion after Romeo Thomas had put Papine High ahead in the 16th.
Matches continue today with Wolmer’s Girls taking on Immaculate at 3:15 pm, after the Papine vs Excelsior encounter at 2:00 pm, with Boys Zone B leaders unbeaten Jamaica College (six points) taking on Mona High, who will open their campaign of the season at 4:15 pm.
