Milk River qualify for mid-season final
HAYES, Clarendon — Milk River United became the first team to qualify for the mid-season final of the Clarendon Football Association/Captain’s Bakery Major without kicking a ball, after promoted Young Strikers failed to show for a rescheduled game at the weekend.
Milk River, who are the only unbeaten team in the competition after eight rounds with six wins and two draws, were awarded the match, along with three goals.
They now tally 20 points and can only be overtaken by second-placed New Bowens FC, 19, as they are seven clear of third-placed York Town.
New Bowens, who were also awarded three points and three goals for their weekend game against Sanguinetti after the home team failed to prepare the match venue, are now poised to join Milk River in the end-of-round final, courtesy of a 2-0 blanking of the backtracking Sunnyside FC on Monday.
Kevon Smith gave New Bowens the lead in the 30th minute, before Leon Callaghan in the 52nd secured the points at the New Bowens Community Centre.
The only other team in with an outside chance of making the incentive final are York Town, but they must win their two remaining games by wide margins and hope New Bowens suffer big losses in their remaining encounters.
In the meantime, three mid-week games will be played between today and tomorrow.
Today, second from bottom Young Strikers (four) will host York Town at Kemps Hill High and cellar dwellers Gayle FC (four) will play Sanguinetti (eight) at Gayle.
Tomorrow, Rock River (12) and Sunnyside (11) will battle for fifth-place at the Wembley Sports Complex. Action on both days will begin at 3:30 pm.
