Sigma Corporate 5K run on today
SOME 10,000 participants are gearing up for the 12th staging of the PanCaribbean Sigma Corporate 5K event which begins at 7:30 am at Emancipation Park today.
Walkers, joggers and competitive runners from 85 companies are hoping to share in the goal of raising $10m for Children with Disabilities as in the words of PanCaribbean “Special children need special care”.
Dubbed the “Caribbean’s largest fitness event”, the Sigma Corporate 5K has raised since its inception in 1999 some $40m in charitable contributions for health and child-related activities.
For the first time this year organisers will use MyLaps® timing, powered by Digicel’s Broadband technology, the lastest technology in race timing with a limit of 10,000 persons.
“We will be the first major event in the world to feature this system,” organisers claim. “Each entrant will receive an official MyLaps-race bib with an embedded chip that will provide accurate timing start line to finish line.”
PanCaribbean’s Corporate Sigma 5K is open to participants of all fitness levels and one year a pregnant mother two weeks short of giving birth participated with the father-to-be by her side.
Pre-race activities and post-run celebrations with an awards ceremony have been a feature of the annual event which is now becoming a tradition.
