Clinical Cavalier close in on title
CAVALIER inched towards the Claro/KSAFA Super League title after drubbing Real Mona 7-0 at Collie Smith Sport Complex yesterday.
The leaders are ahead of Santos by two points entering next wekend’s final round of matches, but can wrap up the league with a win against Mountain View in a rescheduled game at Excelsior on Wednesday.
Donovan Alvaranga (31st & 58th) and Kirk Fletcher (78 &87th) scored twice in Cavalier’s romp.
However, Fabian Swaby got the title chasers off to an incredible start by netting after 32 seconds. Phillip Riley and Locksley Thompson got the other goals as Cavalier swept aside Real Mona with consummate ease.
Santos stayed in the hunt with a 3-1 win over Constant Spring at the Spring Complex.
Meanwhile, after having three points deducted for using an inelligible player, Rae Town squandered their slim chance when they drew 0-0 with the JDF at Breezy Castle.
At Spring Complex, Santos took the lead after 41 minutes through Fabian Nethersole, but Denzil Mitchell equalised for the hosts three minutes later.
Ricardo Martin put Santos back ahead with a goal in added time before the break. Twelve minutes into the second half, both teams were reduced to 10 men when Mitchell and Santos’ Sheldon Madden were ejected.
Kirk Edwards scored for the Carlton Dennis-coached Santos three minutes before the end to secure the points.
In other matches, Duhaney Park defeated Barbican 2-0 with a brace from goalkeeper Omar Williams (78th and 89th) from a free kick and the penalty spot.
Troy Clue gave the visitors the lead in the 76th.
Mountain View played to a 1-1 draw with Bull Bay at Excelsior. Sheldon Madden’s 47th-minute strike put Bull Bay 1-0 up, but Troyland Williams scored his 15th goal of the season to earn a point.
At Michigan field, Maverley/Hughenden turned up late for their match against Meadhaven, while Rockfort edged into the lead in the Major League after former leaders Central KIngston had their game postponed.
Two other games were postponed — Cooreville vs Whitfield and Olympic vs UWI — because of waterlogged fields.
Audley Hanson scored five times for Rockfort in their 7-0 demolition of Liguanea at Rockfort, while Brown’s Town cruised to a 4-1 win over Swallowfield.
Rockfort with 38 points sit one points above Central Kingston, with UWI third, six points adrift.
