Boys’ turn at Western eliminations
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Field events will take the spotlight on today’s boys’ eliminations day of the County of Cornwall Athletics Association’s (COCAA) Milo western high school track and field championships to be held at Herbert Morrison High, starting at 9:30 am.
Twelve of the 15 finals to be completed today will be in the field events category, with the 1500m in all three classes also set to be decided.
Twenty-eight schools are scheduled to participate, while defending champions Munro College are expected to dominate based on their good early showing in the throws and jumps.
Westmoreland schools Petersfield and Frome Technical, both of whom have shown significant improvement over the past two years, along with Grange Hill, will try to prevent a Munro sweep of the throws.
Munro’s Emanuel Oniya, who set the discus Class 2 record of 48.55m last year, should erase the Class one standard, which is presently at 48.54m, and should be pushed all the way by teammate Rajae Gayle.
Petersfield’s Glenford Watson, who set the Class three record last year (43.74m), will start favourite in Class 2 event, but should be challenged by Munro’s Jevaughn Shaw, who threw a personal best 47.72m at the STETHS Invitational in late January.
After opening with a meet record 7.34 metres at the Milo Western Relays last Saturday, Munro’s Dexter McKenzie is tipped to retain the Class One long jump, but should keep an eye out for the Herbert Morrison’s Tevaskie Lewin, who won at STETHS with one jump measuring 6.41 metres and appears to be in good health for the first time in over a year.
Today, will also see the first two rounds of the 100m and 200m in all classes, the semi-finals of the 400m and 800m, the 5000m and all three relays, the sprint medley, 4x100m and 4x400m.
