Williams leaps 3rd farthest in NCAA history
TWENTY-0ne-year-old Jamaican Kimberly Williams of Florida State University (FSU) was yesterday named Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) female performer of the week ending February 14.
“Kimberly’s performance at the Tyson meet was phenomenal,” FSU head coach Bob Braman said on the Seminoles website. “Recording the third best jump in (NCAA) history says it all. She’s not just the best track and field athlete in the ACC, but the entire country,” he added.
Defending National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Indoor and Outdoor champion in both long and triple jumps, Williams towered over the competition in the triple jump last weekend at the Tyson Invitational indoor meet with a personal best 14.17m (46ft-6in).
The Vere Technical past student automatically qualified for next month’s NCAA Indoor Championships with the leading collegiate distance and only woman so far to surpass the 14 metres.
A Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Championship bronze medallist last year, Williams will take a break from competition this week before the Seminoles leave for the three-day ACC Indoor Championship beginning on February 25 in Blacksburg, Virginia.
The FSU junior is majoring in business administration and made the dean’s list last year.
