Johnson eyeing possible March title fight
MIAMI, Florida (CMC) — Jamaican light heavyweight boxer Glen Johnson, now back in the world title frame, is eyeing a possible shot at the International Boxing Federation (IBF) belt by late March.
Johnson earned a shot at current IBF 175-pound champion Tavoris Cloud with his victory earlier this month over American Yusaf Mack and says the bout could happen within six weeks.
“March 27th was a date that was thrown at me. I heard ESPN has that date reserved for Tavoris,” Johnson said.
“I don’t yet for sure (but) they are negotiating right now,” added the Miami-based veteran.
Johnson, ranked No 3 by the IBF, revived his tile prospects on February 5 with a smashing sixth-round technical knockout win in Fort Lauderdale over Mack, who is 11 years younger than he is.
The clash between Johnson and the undefeated Cloud could be staged in Florida.
“I would assume it will happen somewhere in Florida. He is from Pensacola and I am from Miami so it makes sense. I would assume it would be in Florida but I have no clue,” Johnson said.
With his win over Mack, Johnson improved his record to 50 wins, with 34 knockouts, against 13 losses.
Cloud is 20-0 with 18 knockouts.
