Edwin Allen, Munro on track in GP series
ANGELS, St Catherine — Edwin Allen High’s 4x800m girls team and Munro College’s boys’ 4x400m remained perfect in their respective events in the Milo Junior Grand Prix after Saturday’s Milo Western Relays at GC Foster College.
The Edwin Allen girls made it four in a row with an easy win in the 4x800m, while long jumper Dexter McKenzie produced a gutsy anchor leg run to win their third straight in the Mile Relay which was completed in driving rain.
Meanwhile, Edwin Allen also ended Manchester High’s three-meet win streak in the 4x400m, while Holmwood also lost for the first time this season in the 4x800m, beaten by Kingston College.
Edwin Allen lead the girls’ 4x800m event with 48 points, followed by Holmwood and Manchester, tied on 36 points.
Despite their loss on Saturday, the Holmwood boys also lead their section with 46 points, well ahead of Vere Technical and Bellefield — both with 20 points.
Manchester are still ahead in the 4x400m points tables with 46 points, but Edwin Allen are now just eight points back on 38, with Holmwood third on 29.
Munro’s 36 points in the boys’ 4x400m doubles that of Holmwood’s 23 points. William Knibb are third on 19 points.
Despite injuries to key members of the Munro team on Saturday, McKenzie battled hard with the Holmwood anchor, being passed with 70 metres to go before going back in front with 40 metres to go to win going away.
Delano Williams led off with hurdlers Jodi-Rae Blackwood and Patrick Williams running the second and third legs.
The girls 4x400m was just as exciting, with Edwin Allen’s Amoy Blake, Manchester’s Natoya Goule and Holmwood’s Jenieve Russell all running outstanding anchor legs.
Edwin Allen had a 10-metre lead at the end of the third leg, with Holmwood further back, but with under 100 metres to go, les then 10 metres separated the three runners.
The teams with the most points at the end of the series will take home attractive cash awards. The 4x800m winners will get $75,000, second place $40,000 and third $25,000.
The 4x400m winners will get $60,000 each; $30,000 goes to the runners-up, with third getting $20,000.
Two more meets are scheduled in the series — the Gibson Relays at the end of February, and the GC Foster Classic.
