Volleyball’s talent search continues tomorrow
THE Jamaica Volleyball Association (JaVA) will stage the second leg of its 2010 registration tour tomorrow at the Fort Clarence Beach in St Catherine.
The National Beach Volleyball Registration event will be used by JaVA to help select Jamaica’s male and female teams for upcoming tournaments.
Registration starts at 8:00 am on the day and persons willing to compete are required to pay a fee of $1,000.
The first leg took place on February 6 at the same venue with close competition in both male and female zones. The male zone saw the duo of Gatasheu Bonner and Kenneth Waugh dominating, while in the female category the combination of Cherine Richards and Cheryl Daley emerged winners.
President of JaVA, Major Warrenton Dixon, explained that though the association is using the competition to seek out players to represent Jamaica in qualification for the 2012 Olympic Games, unearthing fresh talent is its main objective.
“We have the opportunity of qualifying four teams and currently we have one male team and a female team on the circuit. We need to identify two additional teams, a male and a female team to represent us internationally on the circuit if funding allows,” he said. “Olympic will pass and the sport goes on so it is a start of a development process really, which is far more important than just the Olympic itself,” he added.
The exceptional duo of Mark Lewis and Dany Wilson are strong contenders for an Olympic place due to their dominace in regional competitions to date. Though obtaining a bye for this local tour by virtue of their recent achievements, both are also looking to do well at the upcoming Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in July in Puerto Rico.
