Oberlin lead in Eastern Champs
Defending champions Oberlin High are set to retain the Eastern Secondary Schools Association JN/JPS Athletics Championships at the National Stadium after the first of the two-day event ended yesterday.
Nineteen finals have been completed so far with Oberlin leading on 149.5 points, ahead of Buff Bay on 132, Morant Bay on 77.5, Glengoffe on 60.5 and Yallahs rounding out the top five on 47.5 points.
Four records have been broken so far with Oberlin accounting for two — Margaret McKay, who clocked 5:05.15 minutes in the Class Three girls 1,500 metres, and her sister Tasha McKay, who timed 5:07.17 minutes in the Class One event shortly after.
Robert Thomas of Paul Bogle hurled the Class One discus 39.01 metres and Romar Foster clocked 11.68 seconds to win his heats of the boys Class Three 100 metres.
Other wins for Oberlin were Christina Bowen, 1.55 metres for the Class One girls high jump, Trudy McCalla for the Class Two girls long jump with a leap of 5.40 metres, and Shanique Myers, 26.74 metres in the Class One girls discus.
Javere Bell of Seaforth High completed the half lap in 22.64 seconds, topping the field in the semi-finals of the Class One boys 200 metres.
Glengoffe will be looking forward to Tasha Morrison and Abigail Ferguson in the Class One girls 100m, 200m and 400m and Class Three 200m and 400m today, when 61 finals will be decided, beginning at 9:00 am.
