14 finals on Milo COCAA meet today
MARTHA BRAE, Trelawny — Fourteen finals will be decided on today’s girls’ eliminations of the Milo County of Cornwall Athletics Association’s (COCAA) western high schools track and field championships that will be held at William Knibb Memorial High in Martha Brae, Trelawny, starting at 9:30 am.
Seventeen girls schools will take part, four less than the 21 that participated last year, and will see the return of Cambridge High and Merlene Ottey High after missing the last few renewals.
All the field events with the exception of the long jump Class Three, as well as all three 1,500m finals will be run today, as St Elizabeth Technical High girls seek to retain their title.
There will also be heats and semi-finals of the 100m and 200m in Classes Two, Three and Four; the semi-finals of the 800m in Classes Two and Three; the 400m semi-finals for Classes Two and Three, as well as the semi-finals in the Sprint Medley Relays, 4x100m and 4x400m relays.
The boys’ eliminations and the finals of both sections will be held at Herbert Morrison High Thursday and Saturday, respectively.
The Class Two 100m, 200m and 400m are expected to be the most competitive.
Herbert Morrison’s pair of Keja Christie, Kerifa Myers and World Youth Championships representative Seidetha Palmer will square off with the William Knibb pair of Stacika Bright and Kimona Shaw, Shelice Smith of STETHS and Frome Technical’s Rochelle Clayton in the 200m.
Clayton and Irwin High’s Renae Ambersley will be the top athletes in the 400m event.
STETHS’ World Youth representatives Peter Gay Reid and Rochelle Reid should win the Class Two high and long jump events, respectively, while Frome’s Daniel Thomas will be favoured in the shot putt and Class Two discus.
The schools taking part are Albert Town, Balaclava, Black River, Cambridge, Frome Technical, Godfrey Stewart, Grange Hill, Green Island, Green Pond, Hampton, Herbert Morrison, Holland, Hopewell, Irwin, Knockalva, Lacovia, Little London, Maldon, Maud McLeod, Merlene Ottey, Mt Alvernia, Muschett, Petersfield, Rhodes Hall, Rusea’s, Spot Valley, St James High, STETHS and William Knibb.
