Revamp the police force
Dear Editor,
It is important for us to know that our beloved citizens of Jamaica are living in perilous times. What happened recently on Munster Road is frightening, but sadly not surprising. We need to ask ourselves what forced a policeman to do such a despicable thing. Is it because of money? Was this policeman forced into a blackmailing situation by cronies in his neighbourhood? Isn’t it time to dismantle this force and form a more professional police force?
We seem to have a police force that doesn’t have a clue how to prevent crime, much less to solve crime. To promote the officers who were on duty when the weapons and ammunition were found is unwise. Those police officers were on duty to find criminals. That is what they were employed to do.
Promotion should be for the intelligent work police officers do rather than for guesstimating or assumption. If police officers are going to be promoted in this fashion and for long service in the force, then it is only a matter of time before the police force’s top jobs are littered with people who are not bright. How is it possible that one officer was in charge of such a sensitive area as the armoury in Jamaica? Shouldn’t the force have multiple police officers checking the armoury often and then report to the police commissioner?
The force needs to be revamped and police officers retrained by professional police from Scotland Yard and the FBI. Asking corrupt Jamaican police officers to retrain police officers in Jamaica is already a non-starter. ACP Les Green told us that some policemen killed have been involved in criminal activities and some police personnel have called for his head.
ACP Green deserves praise and promotion for his honesty and intelligent mind. He did not guesstimate or assume. He knows, and it didn’t take him long to know that he is working among some of those involved in crime.
