Waulgrovians land Open League crown
WAULGROVIANS turned back title favourites Tivoli ‘A’, 28-22, to land the Jamaica National Open League netball final at the Leila Robinson Courts yesterday.
In the consolation final, GC Foster beat Hampshire ‘A’, 27-20.
In the feature, the young Waulgrovians started brightly and never looked back. Goalshooter Christina Solmon (20 from 24 attempts) combined superbly with goal-attack Simone Forbes (eight from 11) and centre Kellesha Freckleton to jump into an 11-5 lead at the first interval.
Tivoli tried desperately to get back on even terms in the second quarter; however, towering goalkeeper Jameal Fowler and goal defence Paula Thompson proved too much for goal-shooter Cleopatra Grant and goal-attack Nickeisha Cohen.
Tivoli’s coach Sylvester Campbell made a number of changes at half-time, but Waulgrovians never looked like relinquishing their lead.
Tivoli started the final quarter with a purpose, but as the Waulgrovians continued to impose themselves, their fight slowly dwindled and the Marietta Anderson-coached side secured a convincing win.
Grant had nine from 14 attempts for the West Kingston side, while Cohen netted eight from 12 and Jodi-Ann Kentish, five from nine.
Earlier, Catillon Frazer scored eight from 15 attempts and Crystal Gordon 19 from 23 as GC Foster defeated Hampshire for the consolation title.
Tara Wilson led Hampshire with 13 from 21 and Vanessa Jones seven from nine attempts. GC Foster led 8-6 after the first quarter, 13-9 at half-time and 19-15 at the end of the third.
