Brown into semis of ATP Challenger tourney
Dustin Brown’s outstanding performance on the tennis court continued after booking a semi-finals spot in the ATP Challenger Bergamo International in Italy yesterday.
Brown, 25, turned back the challenge of Swiss qualifier Roman Valent 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 in yesterday’s quarter-final.
Seeded number three for this tournament, Brown was pushed all the way by the world 499th-ranked Swiss, in a game lasting just over two hours.
But the big-serving Jamaican top-seed powered through to the last four with 24 aces, while breaking his opponent on three occasions.
At the same time, however, the 6’5″ Brown had to save 10 of 12 breakpoints as Valent, the 2001 Wimbledon Junior’s tournament champion, forced a decider by taking the second set.
The class and form of the Jamaican proved to be the difference in the third set as Brown recorded an impressive 93 percentage points won on his first serve and another 64 per cent on second serve.
The world #132-ranked Brown will now meet second-seed Karol Beck of Slovakia in today’s semi-final as he goes in search of his first ATP Challenger title for 2010.
Beck, ranked 131st in the world, defeated Croatia’s Ivan Dodig 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in quarter-final action also played yesterday.
On the other side of the draw, wildcard entrant Gilles Muller, who knocked out tournament’s top-seed Mikhail Kukushkin in the second round, is also into the semi-finals after beating Poland’s Michal Przysiezny 7-6, 6-4.
Muller of Luxemburg will meet seventh-seed Dominik Hrbaty, who swept aside Serbia’s IIija Bozoljac in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
