H’Morrison to co-host Western Champs
SAV LA MAR, Westmoreland — Herbert Morrison High in Montego Bay will host two of the three days of the 2010 Milo County of Cornwall Athletics Association’s (COCAA) Western High School Champions Relays which will be held next week.
With the unavailability of the Catherine Hall Sports Complex for the staging of the final on Saturday, February 20, the decision was taken at Wednesday’s launch at Mannings School in Savanna-la-Mar to move it to Herbert Morrison, who will also host the Boys eliminations two days earlier.
William Knibb in Martha Brae will host the girls’ eliminations on February 16.
Rudy Robinson, vice-president of administration for COCAA, told a meeting of coaches on Wednesday that given that schools had already planned and budgeted to go to Catherine Hall for the final, travelling to Herbert Morrison, which is adjacent to the venue, would not be an additional financial burden.
A number of coaches had asked for the final to be staged at the St Elizabeth Technical in Santa Cruz, if Catherine Hall was not available.
The unavailability of the Catherine Hall complex has also affected the staging of the 32nd Milo Western Relays that has been forced to make a belated move to GC Foster College in Spanish Town this Saturday.
Twenty-six boys’ schools and 17 girls’ schools, led by respective defending champions Munro College and STETHS, will take part in the meet that has been sponsored by Milo for the fourth straight year.
Suzanne Wilson Wong, sponsorship representative for Milo, told the launch on Wednesday that her company had taken a decision to focus on the regional and ‘smaller’ meets to help with the development of the athletes.
Before the athletes can get to the bigger stages such as the Boys’ and Girls’ Champs and the Penn Relays, she says there is a greater need at this level for companies to get involved.
