Village blitz destroys W’House 3-0
FALMOUTH, Trelawny — Two early goals from Troy Smith piloted struggling Village United to a big 3-0 win over high-flying Waterhouse at the Elliston Wakeland Centre in the Digicel Premier League yesterday.
Smith scored in the sixth and 14th minutes, while Omar Allen netted in the 31st as Village won their second straight game to go to 26 points.
Waterhouse had a miserable afternoon and veteran striker Kevin Lamey came close twice, hitting the bar in the first half with a free kick, then muffing a penalty in the second.
Despite the win, Village coach Paul ‘Tegat’ Davis was not ready to accept that his team had ‘turned the corner’ or was out of relegation danger. He told reporters after the game, “We need to win more games and games at home before we can start to get comfortable”.
Davis said their win against Harbour View “showed us where we were going”.
He said yesterday they used the same system that worked against Sporting Central last week.
“These guys (Waterhouse) play the same system and we applied ourselves to that system, getting close to the ball, getting behind the ball and tried to get the goals, and we did that,” he pointed out.
Geoffrey Maxwell said while he could not predict the scoreline, he knew his team would lose as they did not come into the game focussed on football.
“I sensed this before we left Kingston. I wasn’t happy with a lot of things before we left… and we just paid the price,” he said.
Maxwell, who allowed assistant coach Baris Johnson to address the team at half-time, said with about 15 minutes to go he had conceded the game and made some changes to allow some of the younger players a chance to play while trying “to ensue that senior players like Lamey did not get hurt”.
The teams had barely settled when Smith, the former national youth player who moved from left-back to midfield, beat goalkeeper Richard McCallum to give his team the lead.
He doubled the scores in the 14th minute when he converted from the penalty spot after a Waterhouse defender had handled the ball, again giving McCallum little chance.
Omar Allen added to the Kingston team’s miseries in the 31st when he was allowed to control a rebound and with the goalkeeper out of position, shot into an unprotected goal.
Lamey should have pulled one back for Waterhouse in the 37th, but his free kick beat goalkeeper Ryan Cooper, hit the upright and rebounded into play.
