Gov’t has created a huge Ponzi scheme
Dear Editor,
Most Jamaicans are very intelligent and everyone has an opinion, especially about politics and how the country should be run. A lot of ordinary people and business people truly have great ideas such as what to do with Air Jamaica – how many planes and routes we really need to be viable and make a profit.
While we are on this argument about the IMF and cutting the debt, where is the justification of the expenditure for having a dormant army? What is its purpose? Maybe if it was mandatory that a great percentage of the thousands of unskilled youths leaving schools throughout the island were trained in useful trades along with discipline, even Caricom could benefit.
If the politicians and the powers-that-be worked for the people and made the laws that benefited the country, the results would be a programming of a mindset of growth and harmony. If the government had lowered the GCT to even 10 per cent they could have got away with putting it on everything across the board, with the blessing of the people. If the government wants to raise property tax and collect more revenue it’s not that hard. Just cut out property tax for every taxpayer’s personal place of abode under a certain amount and raise the tax on all other properties.
If our politicians would only listen to the people we would all be better off than following the IMF and God knows what or whom. What has happened to us, the Americas and the world is that since the days of the biggest and baddest gun, governments created systems – capitalism, communism, democracies along with their financial systems – but because of man’s selfish greed the biggest gun still rules. It’s just now called the golden rule. Who has the gold makes the rules – the rules of investments, the rules of penalties.
People may say I sound angry. I am; because from birth I have been lied to by these people in the positions of leadership and the misplaced people that follow them. Just look around us, look at the poverty and the hatred in such a Christian country where everyone knows everyone. How do some sleep at night? Where is your pension? Where is your social security? What have you been working for? So far it would seem that the people in the position of government have only created a huge Ponzi scheme.
