Carl Morrison steps into the spotlight
You’ve heard his voice doing background vocals on songs including Gyptian’s Mama Dont Cry, Christopher Martin’s Take My Wings, and Turbulence’s Name and Number. Now, he has stepped out on his own and doing big things. Producer and background singer Carl Morrison has been warming up radio and the dancehall scene with his musical prowess.
Morrison is the person behind two of Busy Signal’s latest songs, One More Night and Night Shift. He also had a hand in Sean Paul’s latest single, Hold My Hand.
“From I was a child, my father was a singer and he had a band called The Splash Gang. I used to listen to him rehearsing with the band and that’s really where my interest in music developed,” Morrison said in a recent interview.
The former music teacher (he taught at Sts Peter and Paul Preparatory) who honed his production and vocal chops while working with producers including Arif Cooper and Kemar ‘Flava’ McGregor, says he’s bringing something fresh and real to the game.
“The first thing is, I’m bringing my real talent and something fresh. Music is something I love from my heart. I would’ve given up a long time ago because a lot of producers have done some dishonest things to me business wise. But I stick it out and continue doing what I love to do,” Morrison confided.
Commenting on the success of his most recent productions, Sean Paul’s Hold My Hand and the two hits from Busy Signal, Morrison said he wasn’t the least surprised that the songs took off the way that they have. “I knew the Sean Paul song would’ve done well. I built that track around 2007 and it was submitted to Sean. He heard it and liked it. As for the Busy Signal songs, we were in the studio vibing and we were talking about covering some songs from the 1980’s, and Night Shift and One More Night were the songs we chose,” he explained.
Morrison has been doing some work with Juke Boxx CEO Shane Brown. He is featured on Brown’s interpretations of the Silver Plate and Boops rhythm projects.
“I am working on a lot of stuff right now. Nuff things coming out so listen out for them,” he said.
