Not unneighbourly
Dear Editor,
I sat reading the Observer quietly for the first in a very long time and stumbled across the January 29 letter, “Can we really welcome Haitians”.
The writer, Richard Stewart, is not alone in his thoughts. We are not able to accept Haitians openly when we are financially strapped, have no infrastructure in place to provide for our own citizens. There are too many homeless individuals roaming our streets, most of them not by choice but an inability to maintain what they worked hard for.
We will not be looked upon as being unneighbourly – we are doing what we can with the little that we have.
