JADA remembers ‘Prof’
The Jamaica Association of Dramatic Artists (JADA) in a release yesterday paid tribute Professor Rex Nettleford for his immeasurable contribution to the performing arts in Jamaica and across the globe.
It was noted that as a founding member of the National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica, “Prof took our history and cultural experiences to the world with a determination that would not be challenged; after all, was there ever another University Vice Chancellor who could also dance with the style, authority and flair of Rex Nettleford!”
He was hailed for his undisputed love for Jamaica and respect for its people which will continue to be showcased in such works as Street People, Court of Jah, Kumina and Edna M.
“As a storyteller he will be remembered for such varied works as African Scenario, The Crossing and Back to Bach, Viva Bach. His artistic contribution to a variety of musicals and pantomimes were virtually a testimony to the quality of each production.
“As a mentor and a teacher Rex taught us — much to the distress of many in the earlier years — that it was alright to dance barefoot and to swing our hips in time to the rhythm and soul of our Caribbean music. We know, however, that the secret of his success was that he did not simply ‘lift things from the street or the bush and put it on-stage without filtering it through the creative imagination'” JADA said in their release.
In saying goodbye to our dear brother Rex, our beloved “Prof”, we say “Thank you for encouraging even the humblest among us to dream; to know that we can rise above all circumstances; and to take our rightful place in the world’s spotlight”.
We see you now – arms outstretched, red Kumina cape flowing around your shoulders and with that enigmatic little smile upon your lips – as you take your final bow and step back to join the line of distinguished Jamaicans who have blessed us with their talents.
Bravo, Prof! And heartfelt thanks from a grateful theatre community and a grateful nation!
