The ‘new’ heroes
Black History Month is a time when we reflect and appreciate the strides and successes of ancestors of the people who were once enslaved and deprived of privilege. It is common practice to look at movements that had black empowerment at their core such as the Civil Rights Movement. This year we will be celebrating the modern trailblazers who have taken the torch from their ancestors and have dominated in their respective careers.
Michael Jackson
The ‘King of Pop’ and the ‘Greatest Entertainer That Ever Lived’ are just a few names that only scratch the surface of who the legendary Michael Jackson was. From sold out concerts to record breaking album sales, Jackson knew the ins and outs of entertainment with his perfectionist flair and incomparable dance moves. The fact that there is no generation presently who will not know about the Moonwalk King is proof of his greatness.
Bob Marley
This home-grown reggae icon is remembered for his conscious lyrics and infamous dreadlocks, but most of all Marley had an appeal that was undeniable. He put the Rastafarian movement on the map and made the easily recognisable black, green and red a desirable commodity for tourists and the world at large. Even years after his death, he still keeps the world ‘Jammin’.
Denzel Hayes Washington Jnr
This actor possesses a debonair style both on screen and off screen and is the favourite amongst women everywhere. His acting chops show that he is versatile with movies such as Hurricane, Malcolm X, Training Day, recent release Book of Eli and many others under his belt. Washington wears the hats of screenwriter, director and film producer and does this with ease.
Tyra Banks
Tyra Banks defies the cliché that models are all beauty and no brains. This intelligent and stunning woman has come from in front of camera to host her own self-titled day-time show, which she has received rave reviews about. Her show America’s Next Top Model not only teaches girls to be catwalk divas, but to embrace womanhood with poise.
Ben Carson
This neurosurgeon turned author is nothing short of spectacular. In his autobiography ‘Gifted Hands’ one learns that Ben’s earlier years was ironically filled with failure and it is through perseverance and drive that he rose to the occasion. He has saved lives and has done so with a humility that is truly commendable. In his book ‘Think Big’ he invites us to not settle for mediocrity, which is a great message.
Tyler Perry
This director/actor is a genius in his own right. He has the ability to play multiple roles in a movie — he even plays three roles in the same scene, but what what puts perry apart is his play/script writing prowess. His sense of humour translates into his quality comedies that is very family-friendly. Any man that can play a 70 something year old woman definitely get probs.
Prince
From his infamous dance moves to his unbelievable talent, Prince is the epitome of big things come in small packages. He can play almost every instrument with a flair and style that is all his own. He has re-invented himself many times and each time evolving into an even more sought after artist. His controversial name change to a symbol shows that Prince stands by what he believes which we deem to be very cool
Michael Jordan
This basketball great adorned the number 23 jersey and turned the world of sports on its head. He brought a level of finesse that was unparalleled by most sportsmen. He started the trend of retiring and returning and that was simply a sign that he was dedicated to his team and his fans.
Stevie Wonder
Stevie had a vision for music that completely contradicted him being visually impaired. From making hits with Michael Jackson to writing love ballads that have stood the test of time, this music veteran definitely knows how to touch people with his music. His unique keyboard skills is merited as heralding the change in pop music.
