Devils take out Gunners
EPL: Manchester United subjected Arsenal to an embarrassing 3-1 defeat at the Emirates to put their title credentials in question. A Manuel Almunia own goal along with goals from the red hot Wayne Rooney and Park Ji-Sung ended the contest for the Gunners.
Chelsea continued their impressive run and showed again why they are title favorites by dispatching Burnley 2-1 at Turf Moor. Goals from Nicolas Anelka and John Terry sealed the victory for the Blues. Liverpool eased to a 2-0 win over Bolton at Anfield to close in on Tottenham in the race for a Champions League spot.
Dirk Kuyt opened the scoring after 37 minutes and the second came from a Kevin Davies own goal. Tottenham allowed another late goal in stoppage time to end their match with Birmingham 1-1.
Hull City allowed Wolves to come from two goals down to draw the match 2-2 and only claimed a point. Matthew Jarvis scored the all-important leveller for Wolves. Aston Villa strolled to a 2-0 victory over Fulham with a Gabriel Agbonlahor brace.
Everton edged Wigan 1-0 while West Ham and Blackburn played to a 0-0 draw. Emmanuel Adebayor scored upon his return to Manchester City and led his side to a 2-0 win against struggling Portsmouth.
No Ronaldo, no problem
La Liga: Real Madrid won their first game away at Deportivo la Caruna in 18 years thanks to a Granero strike and a brace from Karim Benzema. The new look Galacticos didn’t have CR9, but gained a comprehensive 3-1 victory.
Sporting Gijon pushed champions Barcelona all the way, but went down to a solitary first-half strike from Pedro. The win keeps Barca’s train rolling as they continue to set the pace at the top of La Liga. Espanyol also had a narrow 1-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao. Osasuna and Malaga both had 2-0 victories over Villarreal and Atletico Madrid respectively.
Real Zaragoza had a comfortable 3-1 win over Tenerife while Racing Santander and Getafe played to a goalless draw. Promoted side Xerez defeated Mallorca two goals to one, while Valladolid and Almeria drew 1-1. Sevilla moved within three points of third place Valencia with a 2-1 victory over them.
Milan fails to win again
Serie A: AC Milan to could only manage a draw against Livorno and are now eight points off the pace in the title race. Cristiano Lucarelli scored the equalizer after Ambrosini had given Milan the lead.
Roma defeated bottom of the pile Siena 2-1 thanks to a late goal from Fulham bound Stefano Okaka. Bari defeated Palermo 4-2 in an exciting match in which Bari had four different scorers. Napoli’s game against Genoa ended in a tame goalless draw.
Udinese against Catania and Chievo versus Bologna both ended one goal a piece. Fiorentina came from a one goal deficit after taking the lead to rescue a point against Cagliari as their match ended 2-2. Sampdoria had an easy 2-0 victory over Atalanta. While Juventus’ miserable season continues as they drew 1-1 with Lazio.
Wolfsburg continue to struggle
Bundesliga: Champions Wolfsburg continue to find that it is harder to defend a title than claim it, as they succumbed to a late leveller from Piotr Trochowski and drew 1-1 with Hamburg. Edin Dzeko had earlier given the German champions the lead which they eventually failed to hold on to.
Bayern Munich continued their assault of the title run with an easy 3-0 win over Mainz. Borussia M’gladbach edged Werder Bremen in a 4-3 thriller thanks to a Raul Marcelo Bobadilla brace. This was Bremen’s second defeat in as many weeks as they went down to Bayern Munich in the last round.
Cologne defeated Frankfurt two goals to one and Nuremburg strolled pass Hannover 3-1. Bochum and Hertha ended in a 0-0 draw while Schalke brushed aside Hoffenheim 2-0. Stuttgart and league leaders Bayern Leverkusen both had big victories over Borussia Dortmund and Freiburg respectively. Stuttgart won 4-1 and Leverkusen 3-1.
