Carter to debut indoors, eyes Qatar
BEIJING Olympics 4x100m relay gold medallist Nesta Carter will be competing indoors for the first time in his career this season.
Carter opens his 2010 season at the Queen’s/Grace Jackson track and field meeting at the National Stadium on Saturday.
The Jamaican representative, who said he will compete in at least two indoor meets in London early this season, made a special request for the 100m from Queen’s meet organisers to help in his preparations.
“I’ve been running some good 60m times… me and (my) coach talked about it and I said I would like to try so he said alright,” Carter told the Observer shortly after completing a training session yesterday morning.
“I’m going to see if I can match up with the big boys,” he added.
Carter, who ran the third leg in Jamaica’s world record finish at the 2008 Olympic Games, missed out on another major event in 2009 after suffering a hamstring injury just before the National Senior Championships in June and did not compete.
The former Manchester High student has only run one indoor race in his career — at a high school event in New York almost five years ago.
Jamaican athletes are not fond of competing indoors, a phenomenon the 24-year-old tried to explain.
“I think because indoors it’s 60m and we (Jamaicans) are not really used to running the 60m,” he reasoned.
Carter told the Observer he has plans to race in two meets in London and if his times are good enough, he may compete at the World Indoor Championships in Doha, Qatar, in March.
“Once my time is really impressive, I will like to give it a try to see if I can win at 60 metres,” he said.
Carter, who is the third fastest Jamaican over 100m with a 9.91-second clocking in Shanghai on September 20 last year, said the aim was to lower that mark even further this year.
“I think I could go faster, but I just have to say ‘thank God’. As the bar rises higher, you have to see if you can go higher without touching it,” he joked.
