Machismo outdated
Dear Editor,
I was flabbergasted when I saw how the learned retired judge chairing the Finsac Enquiry spoke to a young attorney recently in a manner not befitting the ethics of jurisprudence.
What I found interesting was when I heard the eminent judge telling the attorney to sit down in a tone of voice that just wasn’t proper. An arrogant macho image has no place in the legal culture of the 21st century.
I was impressed with the dignity of the attorney who sat with poise showing that she possessed not only intellectual legal class but would not genuflect to any position that would cause her to lose her self-confidence, self-awareness and intellectual integrity. As the attorney stepped out of the building, Jamaican women could feel proud that here was a young person whose self-consciousness was the victor. According to Thomas Aquinas, such courage is the strength of mind capable of conquering whatever threatens the attainment of the highest good. The attorney’s atitude at the Finsac Enquiry reflected the highest ethical standard par excellence.
