Carey is the right man
Dear Editor,
It is indeed very strange that the same people who were calling for the dismissal of Minister of Finance Audley Shaw have now turned their frustrations on the chairman of the inquiry into the collapse of the financial sector in the 1990s, former judge of the Supreme Court Boyd Carey.
To have a man of this level taking on the arduous and Herculean task of unearthing the truth behind the collapse of banks is worth every penny of the $15 million or approximately US$160,000 that he is being paid.
One wonders whether some people are afraid to have this inquiry continue because of what might be revealed to us – the people who have lost everything, including the respect of our children because they now see us as having failed.
It is very important for them to know the truth as to why we did fail: many of these young people have no intention of trying anything for themselves because they are of the firm belief that if they do, the same fate that befell us, their parents, will sooner or later befall them.
Mr Shaw has made the right move in naming Justice Carey chairman of the inquiry, and I know that the minister is strong enough to fight off all of the challenges that will come his way to stop the investigations into the financial meltdown of the 1990s.
