Records go at Hurdles/Relays meet
SEVEN records tumbled at yesterday’s 3rd Central Hurdles and Relays meet at GC Foster College in St Catherine.
Four of those came in the hurdles, with the ramaining three being shared among the relays and 400 metres.
Janieve Russell of Holmwood, who placed second in the Class 3 80m hurdles at Boys’ and Girls’ Championships in 2009, clocked an impressive 13.99secs to win the Class Two 100m hurdles.
The Carifta U-17 300m hurdles gold medallist shaved 0.60 seconds off Sashawna Bennett’s 2008 mark of 14.59.
Osheen Erskine (14.31) of Holmwood and Edwin Allen’s Keenan Davis (14.44), who finished second and third, also dipped under the old mark.
Stefan Fennell of Kingston College, the reigning Class Two gold medallists from Champs, posted 14.64 to erase the 15.29 established in 2008 by Munro’s Patrick Campbell.
Fennell’s schoolmate Divonte Dennis was second in 14.86, and STETHS’ Davian Dennis (14.88) third.
Earlier, Fennell watched as his Class 3 100m hurdles record of 13.92 was erased by Jamaica College’s Tyler Mayson, who clocked 13.87.
Okeem Williams of STETHS and Calabar’s Michael Ohara took the minor places in 14.03 and 14.43 seconds, respectively.
Marlon Dixon, who placed eighth in the 400m hurdles final at Champs 2009, turned the tables on fourth-placed finisher Jodi Rae Blackwood of Munro while posting a record 55.28 to win the event.
The old record of 56.49 was established by STETHS’ Nicholas Maitland in 2008.
Blackwood, who clocked 57.61, finished joint third with JC’s Javarn Gallimore, behind Kyle Robinson, also of JC.
Meanwhile, the girls from Holmwood were supreme in the 4x100m relays, winning three of the four classes, while Edwin Allen (4×800) and Manchester (4×400) took the early lead in the Milo Junior Grand Prix events.
The boys of Holmwood lead the Prand Prix in both 4×400 and 4×800 relays.
The top three in the two categories will receive prize monies based the points earned in the six-race series.
