Paul Island, Mt Grace hunt End-of-Round spoils
FROME, Westmoreland — Paul Island will go in search of their second End-of-Round title in two years when they take on Mt Grace this afternoon in the first such final of the Captain’s Bakery Westmoreland Major League at the Frome Sports Club.
In addition to the trophy, today’s winners will collect $10,000 with $5,000 going to the losers.
The two finalists booked their places after good wins in rescheduled matches played on Monday.
Mt Grace topped Zone A with 11 points, one more than Extra Flexx after blanking Dunbar’s River 3-0 at Blackness Oval, while Paul Island went on a goal-scoring spree, hammering Chantilly Gardens 10-1 to top Zone B on 13 points.
These games were originally scheduled for mid-December, but were postponed due to bad weather.
Paul Island won the first End-of-Round final last season, but failed to make it to the semi-final of the Major League.
On Monday, Shane Vanhorne with four goals and second-half substitute Damion Williams scored hat-tricks to lead the assault for Paul Island.
Vanhorne bagged a first-half hat-trick in his tally with goals in the 8th, 13th and 37th minutes. He also scored in the 50th.
Williams, who came on at the start of the second half, netted in the 61st, 74th and 79th. Dane Spence also scored twice — in the 10th and 82nd — while Derrick Malcolm got the other goal in the 76th.
Dexter Haughton scored for Chantilly in the 72nd minute.
Today’s game will be played to the finish, with extra-time and penalties to be used if necessary to decide the winners.
