Meadows win again in Super League
HAYES, Clarendon — Meadows FC continued to take the South Central Confederation Super League by storm after extending their unbeaten run to eight games with a big 5-1 whipping of Original Hazard last Saturday at Wembly.
The Spanish Town-based outfit, which is in its debut season of Confederation football, got their goals through Keron Whyte (19th and 36th), Ross Burton (28th and 75th) and Orville Newell in the 86th minute, as they continue to lead the 12-team competition with 20 points — three more than nearest rivals Tru-Juice.
In other games played at the weekend, Bodles defeated Woodhall 3-2 at Turners Oval to move back into the top six with 12 points — the same as Tafari Lions, who were spanked 0-3 by third-placed Newlands (15) at Lacovia Community Centre.
Nickardo Williams in the 15th, Lorenzo Dubidad in the 56th and Tennyson McLeod in the 89th were the scorers for the St Catherine team.
Another St Catherine team, Naggo Head, edged Hillstars 1-0 to take over fourth spot with 14 points.
At Bybrook Oval, Christopher Calder scored a 90th-minute goal to earn Monymusk (11) a 1-1 draw with second-placed Tru-Juice (15). Duane Lewin had earlier given Tru-Juice a 70th-minute lead.
At Downs Community Centre, Leeds earned their first point of the campaign when they held Downs to a 0-0 stalemate.
At Wembly, Meadows ran circles around the struggling Original Hazard and could have easily won by a wider margin were it not for faulty finishing.
Whyte duly opened the scoring by tapping home a right-sided cross from close range in the 19th after his team had spurned three clear-cut chances in the first 10 minutes of play.
Meadows, who also have the records for the most goals scored and the least conceded in the competition thus far, doubled their lead in the 28th when Burton raced through Hazard’s lethargic defence to slot home.
Eight minutes later, Whyte grabbed his brace with a cheeky toe-poked effort to give his team a 3-0 cushion at the interval after Hazard, who fell to 11th following the defeat, struggled to clear their lines.
In the second half Meadows, who were winning their sixth game, looked even more menacing after the rain had subsided, but could only manage two additional goals.
On the stroke of full-time Dwayne Thomas beat the Meadows goalie with a 20-yard shot that hit the underside of the crossbar before crossing the line. A minute later he was again denied by the crossbar.
