J’cans Hinds, Sinclair take runner-up spots as American wins
HAMILTON, Bermuda (CMC) — Korene Hinds turned the tables on Kenia Sinclair but the Jamaican pair had to settle for the minor placings behind American Sara Slattery in the Bermuda International Race Weekend 10-kilometre women’s race.
Sinclair went into Saturday’s race on a high after winning Friday night’s women’s mile-race on Front Street for the second year in a row with Hinds finishing third.
But, as happened in last year’s 10k race, Hinds got the better of her compatriot in the longer race which drew a huge field.
Hinds, who turned 34 yesterday, placed third to Sinclair’s fifth a year ago, but improved one place, finishing some 30 seconds behind Slattery in 35 minutes and 20 seconds.
Hinds, 10th overall in a race in which 647 runners completed the course, was clocked in 35:54 with Sinclair, 14th overall, third in 36:21.
Kenya’s Shadrack Biwot stole the show, however, winning three races on his race weekend debut.
Another Kenyan, Richard Tirop Kessio, won Sunday’s marathon.
Biwot, a 24-year-old US-based runner, is the only competitor to have won three events — Friday night’s mile, Saturday’s 10k and Sunday’s half-marathon — in the same year, and he did so comfortably, even though he only decided to enter Sunday’s half-marathon the previous afternoon after winning the 10k.
Biwot broke the 30-minute barrier in the 10k with a time of 29 minutes, 34 seconds.
American Steven Slattery, whose wife Sara won the women’s race, came second in 30:38 while Kumsa Magersa of Ethiopia finished in third position, posting a time of 31:19.
