Herbert Morrison bounce Spot Valley for 109 points
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Herbert Morrison High School became the first team in the ISSA/KFC Western Conference high school basketball championships to achieved the century mark this season after hammering winless Spot Valley 109-22 in an Under-19 return-round game played on Thursday on the school grounds.
Five players, led by Jervis Hamilton’s 38 points, scored in double figures for the Dave Black-coached Herbert Morrison, who eliminated Spot valley from semi-final consideration with the loss.
Herbert Morrison, who won for the eighth straight time, lead on 16 points, two more than defending champions Cornwall College on 14 points, William Knibb Memorial, 12 points, followed by Mannings School and Muschett High on 11 points each and Spot Valley High on eight.
Meanwhile, Rhodes Hall high suffered back-to-back losses in the Under-16 competition, losing 33-42 to Herbert Morrison on Thursday, a day after being beaten 12-76 by Cornwall College at home.
Cornwall lead with 16 points, followed by William Knibb on 15, Herbert Morrison, 14 points, Muschett, 10 points, and Mannings and Rhodes Hall on seven each.
On Thursday, Herbert Morrison quickly established their dominance, racing to a 27-3 lead after just the first quarter and were up 48-12 at half time and 73-18 after the third quarter before scoring 36 points against the hapless Spot Valley in the final quarter.
Hamilton, who scored six consecutive points midway the second quarter, all on dunks, also had 10 rebounds and seven steals; Kedar Clarke scored 22 points, Rodane Reid, 16 points, Jamoi Richards, 16 points and seven assists and Nico Campbell with 10 points and eight steals for the winners.
Earlier, Herbert Morrison earned their fifth win in the Under-16 section with a come-from-behind 42-33 win against the Hanover school.
Rhodes Hall led by five after the first quarter, 14-9, before the home team rallied in the second quarter to lead by five points, 25-20, at half time.
Herbert Morrison had their best quarter in the third, outscoring Rhodes Hall 15-1 for a 19-point lead, 40-21, that they would need in the fourth as Rhodes Hall rallied to outscore them 12-2 in the fourth.
Daniel Henry led Herbert Morrison with 13 points, while Jahzniel Warren scored 11 points and had seven rebounds with Brandon Cox scoring 12 points for Rhodes Hall and Leon Moncrieff getting 10 points.
On Wednesday, Cornwall ran their record in the Under-16 to eight straight wins, as Robert McIntosh with 17 points and 11 rebounds led them to a 60-point margin win, shutting out the home team on the fourth quarter.
Romaine Hines with 14 points, Tevin Brown with 12 points and Shane Graham with 10 points and 12 rebounds also contributed to Cornwall’s tally.
