RIP, Robbie
Dear Editor,
I wish to pay tribute to Gladstone Robinson who passed away recently. Mr Robinson was known more to the wider public as an outstanding batting stylist who could have gone on to represent the West Indies. He was the recipient of the Order of Distinction.
To us at Boys’ Town, he was more than a sportsman. He grew up in Trench Town and worked quietly and assiduously to improve the lot of the poor. While working as an accountant at Petrojam, he was instrumental in soliciting funds for the start-up and running of a basic school in the 80s and was responsible over the years for the finances of Boys’ Town.
The late Fr Sherlock always referred to Robbie as “Sir Gladdy” and saw him as his heir apparent. The old boys and general cricketing public knew Robbie well and found him a decent and honest person who transcended his humble place of birth but never forgot to lift up those who came from behind. Hopefully, those who received help from Boys’ Town and elsewhere will follow his impressive footsteps. May his soul rest in peace.
