Dragon Stout Domino Tournament continues this weekend in MoBay
THE 2010 Dragon Stout World Series of Dominoes has been racking up quite a following, gaining support and momentum since it kicked off some five weeks ago. From St Thomas to Portland to St Mary to St Ann, the tournament has brought out domino lovers from
all corners.
The tournament continues today and tomorrow with its Zone Two
eliminations at Pecus Lawn, Barnett Street in Montego Bay.
Fifteen players qualified for the quarter-finals from numerous entries that played in Zone One, including one female contender, Hermine Faggarthy, who showed true skill during the qualifiers.
Kerry Newman, managing director of the World Series of Dominoes, said that he was very pleased with the progress of the tournament thus far.
“The qualifications and eliminations for Zone One went very well. The support was overwhelming and we are anxiously looking forward to the staging in Montego Bay this weekend,” Newman said.
The competition boasts a $2-million first prize, while second place is worth a whopping $1 million. Third place earns $500,000, fourth $250,000 and persons finishing from fifth to 16th are guaranteed $50,000 each.
The eliminations will finish up Zone Two at Lucea OTB and Bar in Lucea, Hanover, on January 23 and 24 and then begin Zone Three at Petersfield Plaza in Petersfield, Westmoreland, on January 30 and 31.
The tournament for all the hefty cash bounties will then take place in Kingston at Weekenz, Constant Spring Road, on Saturday, April 3.
The World Series of Dominoes 2010 Dragon Stout Domino Tournament is the first of its kind and the largest domino tournament in Jamaica.
It is a four-man cut-throat competition that will continue to be contested in a very relaxed atmosphere, said Newman, who revealed that the woman who advances the furthest will take home $100,000.
“What this means is that if a woman wins the tournament, she will actually win $2.1 million,” he noted.
In addition, the player who wins six love wins $10,000 and a case of Dragon
Stout instantly.
Joseph Oates, brand manager for Dragon Stout, title sponsors of the tourney, said that the brand is happy to have partnered with the World Series
of Dominoes.
“Dragon is thrilled with the competition’s success. We are happy to know that we have brought such a grass roots game to the people on a large scale such as this. We look forward to even greater things as we look to another round of play-offs this weekend,” Oates said.
