Million Dollar Mawnin’ winner to turn his life around
TWENTY-FOUR-YEAR-OLD Romaine Harvey from Alps in Trelawny did not live a charmed life growing up. He never knew his father and was raised with the help of an uncle, Carlton Christie, a farmer and his mother’s brother. But thanks to the Million Dollar Mawnin’, Harvey is now worth at least one million dollars.
Million Dollar Mawnin’ is the under-the-crown promotion by Red Stripe. With a purchase of Red Stripe, Red Stripe Light, Guinness, Heineken or Smirnoff Ice, consumers have a chance to win prizes including cellphones, and up to a million dollars in cash.
Harvey said he was raised by his mother and his uncle and attended the Albert Town Primary and Cedric Titus High Schools. He is currently employed selling craft items in Ocho Rios, St Ann, a 90-minute drive away from home.
He had just got home from work last week Thursday when he got the call. It was from Irie FM and they put him on hold. He could not believe he was being called because it was only that morning that he texted in the numbers from a Red Stripe bottle cap. “Red Stripe is my drink,” he said. “But a week don’t pass when me don’t drink my Guinness.”
When he was put on air live, he said they asked him what he wanted and he declared “A Million Dollar Mawnin”.
The radio host suggested that he did not sound like he was certain what he wanted. Harvey said he responded by shouting loudly, “A Million Dollar Mawnin!”
He laughed at the memory of the day he became a significantly wealthier man.
Harvey plans to take some time to think about what he wants to do with his million dollars. He says he has been getting advice from all quarters about what to do with his money.
“People been telling me don’t squander it. One man want me to raise chickens with him,” he said. “I know I want a ride but I want some time to think about it. As long as there is something that I can look into and see where I can turn my life around, I will look at that.”
