Kantasingh rips T&T apart again
MONTEGO BAY, St James — The Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) claimed a share the lead after the first round of the West Indies Cricket Board’s four-day first-class Tournament after thrashing Trinidad and Tobago by 151 runs on yesterday’s fourth day at Jarrett Park.
Kavesh Kantasingh once again starred with the ball as he took his second six-wicket haul of the game to bowl out Trinidad for 124 in 51.2 overs as they chased 276 in a minimum 70 overs.
The 23-year-old Trinidadian bagged 6 for 55 for a match haul of 12 for 84.
After Sunday’s wash out, CCC resumed at 105 for four and added just 43 runs from 11.2 overs before declaring and setting Trinidad a target to go after.
Scores in the game, CCC 234 and 148-5 declared; Trinidad 107 and 124.
Floyd Reifer, the captain of the CCC team was in a good mood after telling the Observer they knew they could win and were not worried even when the weather threatened to interrupt their victory chase.
“We were not worried, there is a God above and he knew we deserved this victory and watching over us,” he said.
After beating Trinidad in the second round in Barbados last year, he added: “We knew in the back of our minds we could beat them once we batted as we have a very good bowling attack, we have guys who can take wickets so we had to bat well.”
The plan, he said, was “to bat 10 to 12 overs and get another 50 runs or to get up to 280 (lead) and we know that was a good score on this wicket with 99 overs to go in the day”.
Trinidad’s coach Kelvin Williams admitted his team was outclassed. “CCC outplayed us in all departments; scoring 107 in first and just over 100 in the second innings was just not good enough as a batting unit,” he said, adding: “The main thing was consolidation and we did not do that at all, we just went out there and get caught up in the CCC game.”
He added that his team batted irresponsibly, “played poor shots” and singled out wicketkeeper batsman Denesh Ramdin and the experienced Dave Mohammed. “Ramdin was looking good then gave it away and Dave running down the wicket was not called for in that situation.”
He said it was time to put the first game behind them. “All in all the first game is out of the way and we are moving to Antigua where we need to bounce back.”
The left-handed Kantasingh, who had restricted Trinidad in the first innings on Saturday, was once again the main destroyer as given runs to play with, gave the Trinidadian batsmen more than they could handle.
