Dollars and Sense praised for promoting Jamaica
THE Dollars and Sense game show has been gaining recognition for promoting Jamaica and living by their slogan By Jamaican, For Jamaica, About Jamaica.
The show is produced by Signature Films Production and is aired on CVM TV on Tuesdays at 6:00 pm. Apart from having its contestant vying for a whopping one million dollars, it serves as a means of reviving and promoting Jamaica’s history and culture as all the questions are about Jamaica.
Paulette Coke, a teacher from Kingston, is one such person who is singing praises for the show. “Dollars and Sense is just a refreshing change as we were being fed a steady diet of foreign shows,” she said. “We now have a show which we can identify with. It does very well in informing and educating Jamaicans about our history and important aspects of our lives.”
It also touches on a broad scope of Jamaica’s life from our music, geography, history, language, and sports.”
Explaining how she was introduced to the show she said, “A friend told me about it and I watched it one evening and just loved it from then on. A lot of my friends and family watch it.
“I am happy that a programme like this is on TV. It is playing a very important role in promoting Jamaica and I hope that others may follow and create more programmes such as this, as we need to embrace our culture and history.”
Producer of the event, Joan Edwards, in explaining why Signature Films took the stance in creating a game show about Jamaica, said, “We recognised that we don’t have much local programmes on TV, mostly foreign-based. Our vision is to keep Jamaica alive despite all the economic crisis and high crime rate. Our aim is to highlight the positive things.”
Edwards added, “When we look at Usain Bolt, for example and what he has achieved, breaking records with ease, in all aspects of our lives we always have great individuals so we have lots of reasons to be proud of our country. When we recognise who we are then we can conquer all our problems.”
Imani Duncan, group marketing manager of JMMB, a main sponsor of Dollars and Sense is very pleased with the role that the show is playing.
She said, “JMMB as Jamaica’s truly home grown financial institution fully supports what Dollars and Sense stands for. It’s promotion of Jamaican culture values and vision is very refreshing and is perfectly aligned with what is at the heart of JMMB.
“It is not just a game show, it continues to teach us, refreshing the lessons our young ones are taught in the classroom and reinforcing the teachings adults may have forgotten,” Duncan added.
