Leeward grab first-innings against B’dos
THE Leeward Islands secured first-innings points and held a 27-run lead at close of play against Barbados on day two in the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) regional four-day match at Kensington Park yesterday.
Openers Kieran Powell (10) and Montcin Hodge (four) will resume today for the Leewards who are on 20 without loss.
Both teams battled tooth and nail yesterday, but it took a determined effort from the Leewards to restrict their opponents to 229 — seven runs short of their first-innings score of 236.
The Leewards will be aware that they would have to put in a far better batting display the second time around to ensure victory on a wicket that has been playing low on occasions from the first day.
Barbados resumed on their overnight 74 without loss with Jason Haynes pushing his score to 28 before he played no shot to a delivery from Tonito Willett that straightened and was hit in front with the score on 103.
Dale Richards was more patient on day two, but eventually lost it when he chipped Omari Banks to long on for Powell to run in and take the catch without any change to the score. Richards had struck 60 from eight fours and one six off 105 balls.
Captain Ryan Hinds was Banks’ second victim when he tried to sweep a straight ball and was given out leg-before.
The free-scoring debutant Kyle Hope, along with Kirk Edwards, took the lunch-time score to 146-3.
After the break Hope gave his wicket away for 22 when he drove wrist-spinner Anthony Martin to Powell at mid-on. Off the very next delivery, Kevin Stoute was beaten by a straight delivery that hit him in front to give Martin his second scalp.
Tonge then struck in the following over when he induced an edge from Shamarh Brooks to wicketkeeper Devon Thomas.
Edwards was left to handle the hat-trick ball from Martin when he continued in his next over. It was slow going thereafter as the Leewards attack bowled straight and Liburd could be commended for his spot-on field placings.
