Portland Major league kicks off today
Port Antonio, Portland — The Portland FA Western Union-sponsored Major League Competition gets going today when Breastworks take on former champions Eagle Strikers at Carder Park starting at 3:00 pm.
President of the Portland Football Association Raymond Grant is looking for a good season. “Western Union has renewed their sponsorship to $800,000 and the number teams have increased to 12, the first we have had so many in 10 years. There is great interest in the competition as there are three teams from the southern end of the parish and the return of Uptown Wailers from the west,” Grant said.
The teams will play on a home and away basis in the preliminary round, then a two-way semi-finals and a final.
There will be six former champions in the competition — Eagle Strikers, Norwich, Taurus, Ujama, Progressive and Snow Hill. New teams are Anchovy, Uptown Wailers and Eagle Strikers.
Two games are scheduled for tomorrow with Berrydale hosting Progressive at Berrydale and Taurus United taking on Uptown Wailers at Carder Park.
