For a better year
Dear Editor,
As we reflect on 2009, let us all pray for prosperity and hope this year will reap some of the goodness for which we so yearn. Let us unite and resolve our differences in an amicable, meaningful and civilised way. Our country is the grand legacy given to us by our forefathers, who toiled long hours for us to see the light of day.
Let us work towards noteworthy expectations, quieten our detractors and prove our resilience. We must show the world we never quit in spite of seemingly adverse situations propelled by the tight economic squeeze caused by the recession.
In executing our desired plan of action, we must formulate strict economic undertakings which we can use to harness the talent of every Jamaican in every nook and cranny of our country. We must utilise the full potential of our citizens, in order to put ourselves once again on the road to prosperity. In spite of the fact that partisan politics plays such a crucial role, we ought to abide by the premise that we are Jamaicans. In all spheres and walks of life, we must protect the interest of our country and encourage our fellowmen to do likewise.
Those who are able should embark on initiatives like “The Butch Stewart
Save-the-Dollar-Initiative” 17 years ago. We must plant more trees to protect ourselves from global warming. Investing more in our country will bring us out of the doldrums and import substitution is another way of saving our country. In order to advance our tourist trade we have to be more courteous to our visitors. Ways and means must be presented to change our value system and we have to ensure that we treat our senior citizens with respect because many have served the country well. Finally, the monster called crime must be conquered.
