Unnecessary war
Dear Editor,
The recent incident in Salt Spring and the report of how thugs stood guard to ensure that the attacked buildings were destroyed, preventing fire-fighters from rescuing someone’s home, made me think of other war-afflicted territories such as Israel and the West Bank, Northern Ireland, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Our internal strife is on the level of a war. The trauma and desperation that the survivors of Salt Spring are experiencing are no different from that suffered by displaced persons in Somalia, Eritrea, parts of Sri Lanka and Iraq.
This crime and violence cannot be tackled by regular police efforts. This is a war, we are under siege. Combative, military strategy has
to be employed.
But of course, any strategy undertaken will only be successful if politics and business are interested in a peaceful country. For some, disorder and mayhem are profitable.
