Herbert Morrison hunt semi-final berth in ISSA Under-19 basketball
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Herbert Morrison High could secure a pace in the semi-finals of the Under-19 ISSA/KFC Western Conference high school basketball championships today if they can beat Muschett High when they meet in a second-round game at Herbert Morrison.
The Montego Bay school leads the points’ tables with 14 points after winning all seven games played, while Muschett High are on 10 points from seven games, tied with defending champions Cornwall College, who have played a game less.
Herbert Morrison had won the first-round game played in Wakefield and will be odds on favourites to win again today and improve to 16 points.
The teams will also meet in the Under-16 section where Herbert Morrison will be seeking to take the lead ahead of defending champions Cornwall College.
Both schools are on 10 points each, but Herbert Morrison have played seven games to Cornwall’s five, while Muschett are on seven points from five games.
Meanwhile, yesterday, home team William Knibb beat newcomers Rhodes Hall 55-50 in over time in an Under-16 game played in Martha Brae.
The teams had played to a 48-all tie after four quarters forcing the extra period.
Dexter Anderson and Shavaughn Reid both scored 17 points for William Knibb, as Leon Moncrieffe scored a game-high 24 points for Rhodes Hall.
The win pushed William Knibb to the top of the tables on 12 points, as Rhodes Hall lost for the first time after winning their opening game earlier.
William Knibb led early before the Hanover school took over the lead going into the fourth quarter, but ran out of steam in the fourth quarter and over time period.
William Knibb led 6-4 after a low-scoring first quarter, but both teams upped the tempo in the second quarter where Rhodes Hall outscored William Knibb 18-17 to pull to within a point, 23-22.
Rhodes Hall continued to set the pace and outscored the host 16-12 in the third quarter to lead 38-35, but the hosts rallied late to tie up the scores at 48-all then outscored Rhodes Hall 7-2 in over-time.
William Knibb will return to action tomorrow when they take on Cornwall College in two games in Montego Bay.
