Challenge St George’s with Brazil’s U 20
Dear Editor,
The defending champions and 2009 Manning Cup champions, St George’s College, distinguished themselves to be in a different class by also pouncing on the first leg of the Olivier Shield against St Elizabeth Technical in their opponents’ backyard in December.
The light blues played like men with 15 years’ experience at the highest level, with the grit of coming from behind twice, which has so far characterised their season.
STETHS had to endure a painful lesson, although they looked ominous in the first 20 minutes, and got the first goal to show for it. After that, however, the “Bertis Bell”-led boys walked like Trojans over the STETHS defence to place the ball into some exquisite spaces in goal.
The marauding Georgians executed some of the finest passes in the second half, in some ways reminiscent of Brazil’s 1982 World Cup side.
If the 25-yard shot by the George’s team, which accounted for their second goal, is anything to go by, then it also shows the depth of this team since it came when marksman McCaullay Tulloch was retired injured with an abdominal strain. I look forward to a match-up with Brazil’s Under-20 team.
